About Us

Burhani Foundation was established in 1992 to commemorate the 80th birthday of the 52nd al-Dai al-Mutlaq, the late His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. The foundation is a registered trust, dedicated to furthering the community’s endeavours for environmental awareness and research.  The foundation is committed to unwavering environmental responsibility. The bounties of nature are a gift of the Almighty. They were entrusted to man so that he may enrich his life with them, and he, in turn, is obligated to preserve these bounties from abuse and harm.

Rainwater Harvesting Initative

His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, in his address to community members during the congregations of Muharram in Dubai, UAE, explained the benefits of water conservation, in particular rain water harvesting which has many environmental benefits including fertility of the land, avoidance of pollution, and prevention of soil erosion

1991-1999: The BFI NEERI Award

In collaboration with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Burhani Foundation instituted The BFI-NEERI Award for outstanding and socially relevant research & development in environmental technologies. Every year, nominations were invited from various technical and scientific institutes to recognize the contribution of Indian environmental scientists towards achieving environmental awareness goals.

2010: ‘Climate Change and You’ Conference

A conference-cum-exhibition to demystify the concept of climate change and global warming. Over 700 environment experts and influencers participated in this conference to share and discuss problems and present a way forward.

2011: Project SOS (Save Our Sparrows)

To raise public awareness and inspire action on the declining number of house sparrows, Burhani Foundation launched Project SOS – Save Our Sparrows. The foundation celebrated the 100th birthday of His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin by distributing 52,000 bird-feeders across the world and setting a new Guinness World Record and Limca Record.

2012: Rainwater Harvesting Projects

To address the problem of water scarcity in Dongaon and Talaipada villages of Maharashtra, the foundation implemented rooftop rainwater harvesting projects which helped to recharge groundwater levels.
